Many Christians believe that marriage is for this world and this life only. When we enter into the new heaven and new earth, there is no marriage, for Jesus says, “In the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven” (Matt 22:30) Some thought that since there is no marriage in heaven, Christians resurrect and transform into a neutral or a unisex gender; everyone lives a separate and single live in heaven forever. Is it true that we will forever live a single life without our spouse in heaven? Why then did God create male and female in the very beginning? Why did He marry them as husband and wife? Why did God also say, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” (Gen 2:18)? God decided to make Adam a helper on the sixth day of creation, which was before the fall. Moreover, why did God observe that everything that He made, including husband and wife relationship was indeed very good at the beginning? Will God abolish marriage in the new heaven and new earth?
If with careful study, is it possible that marriage and family are eternal, and that everyone will accompany his/her own spouse in a loving and wonderful relationship? Could the husband and wife relationship and the family live that which God established in the Garden of Eden once again restored in the new heaven and new earth? After all, if it is true, can this be wonderful good news to every faithful believer?
Marriage Is Created by God
In the beginning God created Adam and Eve and matched them as husband and wife. The Bible says, “Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living things that moves on the earth’” (Gen 1:28). Again He said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh” (Gen 2:24).
Also note that God not only gave man and woman relationship and companionship but He also made males and females of animals, birds, insects, fishes, and other living things. Ellen White said, “After the creation of Adam every living creature was brought before him to receive its name; he saw that to each had been given a companion.”
Even until the great Flood, animals and birds were brought into the ark two and two, male and female. She said, “Angels went before these animals and they followed, two and two, male and female, and clean beasts by sevens. These beasts, peacefully and solemnly marched into the ark. The sky seemed clouded with birds of every description. They came flying to the ark, two and two, male and female, and the clean birds by sevens.”
Aside from animals, other living creatures were also in pairs. Even flowers, trees, plants, vegetables, and grains need male and female counterparts to fertilize their seeds for their kinds. It is the creation of God, nothing to do with sin.
Systematically, non-living things work in opposing yet complementary forces. Take for instance, the magnetic force arises from differential gradients of the South Pole and the North Pole magnetic fields. In an atom or molecule, it is necessary to have the same number of protons and electrons to be stable. Similarly, electric force needs differential positive and negative charges to activate the flow of electric current. All these examples reveal the intricate and intrinsic design that God has preordained at the beginning of creation; these physical principles are operational in the universe constantly and are unaffected by the introduction of sin to this planet earth.
Relationship and Principle in Eden
In the beginning, God created Adam and Even, made them husband and wife, and blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it” (Gen 1:28). Ellen G. White said:
After the creation of Adam every living creature was brought before him to receive its name; he saw that to each had been given a companion, but among them, “there was not found a help mate for him.” Among all the creatures that God had made on the earth, there was not one equal to man. And God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a help mate for him.” Man was not made to dwell in solitude; he was to be a social being. Without companionship the beautiful scenes and delightful employments of Eden would have failed to yield perfect happiness. Even communion with angels could not have satisfied his desire for sympathy and companionship. There was none of the same nature to love and to be loved.
If Adam and Eve were faithful to God, they would have been husband and wife forever, producing children as other unnumbered not fallen worlds. When those children became adults, they would marry as husband and wife and continue to populate the earth, according to God‘s original plan for the creation. This earth would have been fully developed with wonderfulness, happiness, beauty and perfection without sin and sickness as other unfallen worlds in the universe. As Ellen White said, “Limited to the earth, he (Satan) will not have access to other worlds to tempt and annoy those who have never fallen.”
Since the people of the unfallen worlds are faithful to God, no sin enters into those worlds to taint any relationships between a husband and his wife. So, relationships are wonderfully perfect forever. Again, Ellen White said, “Christ came in human form to show the inhabitants of the unfallen worlds and of the fallen world that ample provision has been made to enable human beings to live in loyalty to their Creator.”
The Perpetuation of Relationship after the Fall
The relationship of Adam and Even as husband and wife was continuous even after the fall. They still love each other and need each other for reproduction. Other living creatures are growing and producing offspring according to the reproduction principle of God. Ellen G. White said:
God celebrated the first marriage. Thus the institution has for its originator the Creator of the universe. ‘Marriage is honorable’ (Heb 13:4); it was one of the first gifts of God to man, and it is one of the two institutions that, after the fall, Adam brought with him beyond the gates of Paradise. When the divine principles are recognized and obeyed in this relation, marriage is a blessing; it guards the purity and happiness of the race, it provides for man's social needs, it elevates the physical, the intellectual, and the moral nature.
Sin entered the earth when Adam sinned; and the curse and suffering of human beings followed. However, sin did not corrupt the physical laws and principles that govern the universe. For example, the earth, the sun, the moon and the stars are still revolving in their invisible tracts since the beginning of time (see 2 Pet 3:3-7). Similarly, the principle of marriage is forever, unchanged by sin. Humans are God’s creatures. Man and woman know how to be intimate with each other, before and after the fall, as designed by God. Clifford and Joyce Penner in their book, The Gift of Sex: A Christian Guide to Sexual Fulfillment, says, “We are sexual beings by reaction. Sexuality is part of God’s plan of creation. Our maleness and femaleness, our sexuality, is not something added on, or part of our sinful natures; it is part of the original perfect creation of mankind.”
As the Song of Solomon says, ”Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth--for your love is better than wine . . . we will be glad and rejoice in you. We will remember your love more than wine” (Song 1:2, 4). The attraction and affection of husband and wife are also creations by God, and are wonderful and precious gifts from God. He has designed husband and wife abilities to love and to be loved. The Bible says, “Many waters cannot quench love, nor can the floods drown it. If a man would give for love all the wealth of his house, it would be utterly despised” (Song 8:7).
Jesus Confirmed Marriage
Jesus performed the first miracle at the wedding in Cana of Galilee (John 2:1-11). It showed that Jesus had confirmed marriage. Therefore, marriage is good and normal. One day, the Pharisees questioned Jesus about divorce; they asked him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:3-6). Obviously, Jesus does not agree to the concept of divorce. For the Bible has said, “For the Lord God of Israel says that He hates divorce, for it covers one’s garment with violence, says the LORD of host” (Mal 2:16).
Likewise, Paul confirmed marriage. He said, “Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each women have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. Likewise, the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does” (1 Cor 7:2-4). Paul also said, “Marriage is honorable among all” (Heb 13:4). Again he said, “So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself” (Eph 5:28).
“No man is an island,” is an axiom that reminds all that in psychological and physical human nature, man and woman need each other to love and to be loved, and they need each other to establish a family to live a complete life in this world. We believe that the new world to come should also be the same.
Marital Principle is Eternal
God has created three principles before Adam’s fall. First, six days are for labor. Second, the seventh day is the Sabbath. Third, marriage is a husband and wife relationship. These three matters are permanent and have remained unchanged even after sin entered into the world. For instance, the Bible says that the people of God will work to build houses and plant vineyards in six days; they will worship God on every New Moon and Sabbath (see Is 65:17-22; 66:22-23).
We believe that God will not abolish marriage in the world to come. Though marriage is not mentioned as clearly as the Sabbath, we know what God sanctioned as very good at the beginning will not be undone in the new world. Colin and Russell Standish put this way, “It was God’s purpose that a husband and wife should live together for eternity; and after sin separated man from God, the purpose was still the same that husband and wife should live together until the death of one of the partners.”1
Additionally, Charles Crider and Robert Kistler in their book, The Seventh-day Adventist Family: An Empirical Study, affirm that marriage is permanent. They said, “It is very clear that while Adventists may had some misgivings about the marriage ceremony, its religiousness, and who should perform it, they have never deviated from the firm conviction that marriage is permanent. Once a marriage has been performed it is binding upon the two parties “as long as they both shall live.”2
As the Bible says that death is but only a dreamless sleep (see Ecl 9:5-6; John 11:11-14). When Christ returns those who are faithful to Him, He will awake them and bring them to heaven for one thousand years. In the period of millennium, by God’s marital principle, we have reason to believe that God will rearrange and match all the saints to be husband and wife as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. At the end of the millennium, they will return as lovely couple to the new world and live happily and lovingly forever and ever.
For God in Revelation says, “Behold, I make all things new” (Rev 21:5). What Adam has lost in the Garden of Eden through Christ will redeem, restore and make all things new in the new world. Christ claims that He is the Redeemer; the plan of the salvation is also the story of redemption. Accordingly, the Bible says, “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Gen 1:1). This heaven and earth was also new in Genesis that is the same new heaven and new earth mentioned in Revelation. For the Garden of Eden has been renewed to its original status as the new heaven and new earth in Revelation. Ellen G. White said:
In the beginning, man was created in the likeness of God, not only in character, but in form and feature. Sin defaced and almost obliterated the divine image; but Christ came to restore that which had been lost. . . Restored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will “grow up” (Malachi 4:2) to the full stature of the race in its primeval glory. The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be removed, and Christ’s faithful ones will appear in “the beauty of the Lord our God,” in mind and soul and body reflecting the perfect image of their Lord.3
Actually, God through Christ had created unnumbered worlds above (Heb 1:2; Col 1: 15-16), even until today, they enjoy their sinless and wonderful marital lives in the unfallen worlds as Adam and Eve in the very beginning. Mrs. Ellen White in her early vision she had seen other worlds, she also said:
The Lord has given me a view of other worlds. Wings were given me, and an angel attended me from the city to a place that was bright and glorious. The grass of the place was living green, and the birds there warbled a sweet song. The inhabitants of the place were of all sizes; they were noble, majestic, and lovely. They bore the express image of Jesus, and their countenances beamed with holy joy, expressive of the freedom and happiness of the place. I asked one of them why they were so much more lovely than those on the earth. The reply was, “We have lived in strict obedience to the commandments of God, and have not fallen by disobedience, like those on the earth.” Then I saw two trees, one looked much like the tree of life in the city. The fruit of both looked beautiful, but of one they could not eat. They had power to eat of both, but were forbidden to eat of one. Then my attending angel said to me, ”None in this place have tasted of the forbidden tree; but if they should eat, they would fall.”
Without question, the babies of the unfallen world are the descendents of the adults’ marriages. Their marriages and families are perfect and eternal. Obviously, if Adam and Eve were faithful to the Lord, our world would not have fallen and their descents will be sufficient to populate the beautiful and wonderful world, and established their perfect happy families, enjoy their lovely, perfect and wonderful marital lives like the unnumbered unfallen worlds above (Gen 1:28-30). Even Adam has fallen, through Christ’s redemption; He will restore all things to its fullness in the new world to come. Hallelujah! Praise the Lord, and thanks to His wonderful redemption!
In vision again, Ellen White has seen the Garden of Eden had been restored. She said:
The Son of God redeemed man’s failure and fall; and now, through the work of the atonement, Adam is reinstated in his first dominion.
Transported with joy, he beholds the trees that were once his delight--the very trees whose fruit he himself had gathered in the days of his innocence and joy. He sees the vines that his own hands have trained, the very flowers that he once loved to care for. His mind grasps the reality of the scene; he comprehends that this is indeed Eden restored, more lovely now than when he was banished from it. The Savior leads him to the tree of life and plucks the glorious fruit and bids him eat. He looks about him and beholds a multitude of his family redeemed, standing in the Paradise of God.
Dr. Samuele Bacchiocchi in his book, The Marriage Covenant, says, “If God created human beings at the beginning as male and female, with the capacity to experience a oneness of intimate fellowship, there is no reason to suppose that He will recreate them at the end as unisex beings, who will live as single persons without the capacity to experience the oneness of fellowship existing in man/woman relationship.”
And again he said, “If God found His creation of human beings as male and female very good (Gen 1:31) at the beginning, would He discover it to be not so good at the end? We have reason to believe that what was ‘very good’ for God at the beginning will also be ‘very good’ for Him at the end.”
Neither Marry nor Are Given in Marriage
Jesus said, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven” (Matt 22:30). Many believe that since there is neither marriage nor given in marriage in heaven, there will not be any husband and wife relationship in heaven. Probably, we have misunderstood this biblical text.
Initially, the disciples always misunderstand the word of Christ. Take for instance when Jesus said to the disciples, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.” The disciples misunderstood it and as it is because they have taken no bread (Matt 16:6-7). In another instance, Jesus told Peter, “If I will that he (John) remain till I come, what is that to you? You follow Me.” The disciples misunderstood that John would not die before Christ returns (John 21:22-23).
Other examples come to mind about how the masses misunderstood Jesus. When Jesus said, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.” The Jews thought Christ was talking about the temple building; actually, he was speaking of the temple of his body (John 2:19-21). During Pilate's judgment, Christ acknowledged that He was the Christ, the Son of God, but they said that He had spoken blasphemy (Matt 26:63-65). On the cross, Jesus cried for God, but they thought that He was calling for Elijah.
Throughout all the ages people by their sight had misunderstood that the earth is flat and the Sun moves around the Earth. Actually God created the Earth as a round ball and it moves around the Sun. Likewise Matthew 22:30 have been widely misunderstood. The Sadducees do not believe in resurrection, and they made a story to test Jesus, saying, “Whose wife among the seven will she be? For they all had her.” Matthew recorded that Jesus had answered, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven” (Matt 22:30).
Matthew Has Missed Some Words
Please pay attention on this text (Matt 22:30). It shows that Matthew recorded Jesus’ words in simple terms and missed some important words. If we do not study with other relative texts, it is very easily to misunderstand the meaning of the Lord. To such a big and important topic whether there is marriage in heaven, if Christians only base their understanding on this simple and short text and jump to the conclusion that there is no marriage in heaven, we need to reexamine it carefully. It is like a thousand pieces of puzzle. If someone simply pick a piece of them and says it looks like something, possibly he or she may misunderstand it. It is necessary to relate other pieces with the whole picture, then he or she can see it clearly. According to Luke who recorded more details, Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage, but those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die any more, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection” (Luke 20: 34-36).
If we compare Matthew’s and Luke’s record, we can discover Matthew recorded the words of the Lord, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage,” and “but are like angels of God in heaven,” in between this sentence there are some missing words. Luke has added “nor can they die any more,” though it is just few words, yet it makes a great difference. It helps us to see the new light.
Note that when Luke says, “They are equal to the angels,” he means that humans will not die but will live forever like angles in heaven. Thus, the comparison to angels is for longevity and not for marriage.
Combine Matthew’s and Luke’s Records
When Matthew’s and Luke’s records are combined, a clearer image emerges that make Jesus’ words more clearly, “For in the resurrection, those who are counted worthy to attain that age, they neither marry nor are given in marriage at that world, nor can they die any more, for they are equal to the angels.” Through Matthew’s and Luke’s combination, we can find two answers: first, who neither marry nor are given in marriage? Second, in where they neither marry nor are given in marriage? The answers are: first, Jesus pointed to those who were saved and resurrected from death; second, in that new world they will not marry. But Jesus did not deny there are marital lives in that new world. Mrs. White said, “He (Christ) who gave Eve to Adam as a helpmeet, performed His first miracle as a marriage festival.”
Just as on the sixth day of the creation, God matched Adam and Eve as husband and wife, and then they entered the new world as a loving couple, who never marry nor are given in marriage after that.
For instance, just like my marriage, since 1993 my family and I came to North America. Since then my wife and I neither die nor divorce. We love one another, so we have neither marry nor are given in marriage in North America, but we have marital lives, because before we came to North America we had been married in Malaysia.
God’s match-making is far superior to the earthly marriage. Everyday people marry and are given in marriage, giving birth, divorce, and die because this is a sin-sick fallen world. But the world to come it is wonderful and perfect for each has his or her own spouse. All live in pairs, faithful and loving each other forever and ever. God would have joined them together or God let them select their ideal spouse according to His will in the millennium in Heaven before they enter into the new world. There will be no misunderstanding; sorrow, hatred, quarrel, and neither death nor divorce in heaven. Therefore, in such condition, Jesus simply proclaimed that the saints who have been saved and resurrected from death will “neither marry nor are given in marriage in that world,” because what God has joined together, let not man separate.
God Will Match-make for All the Saints
Christian divorcees and spouses who cannot mutually get along are worried that in heaven, they will be stuck to the same person whom they do not like on earth. Will God re-match the same persons together again in heaven? Such persons will not even enter heaven if they hold hatred! One does not need to argue and worry about who will be one’s spouse in heaven. Is it the same spouse in this world? Nobody knows, only God knows. During the millennium in Heaven, God will give them freedom of choice to choose their best spouse; if their marital relationship is incredible in this life, and both of them are saved, they have the right to choose the same one to become their eternal spouse. Thus, in this situation only God knows and He makes the ultimate decision. In ancient times, they obey parents or mediator’s choice. Even today’s free marriage, many people choose according to personal limited choice--fall in love blindly. This is not ideal and not perfect, for it is not God’s direct match.
The Bible says that the law of the marital relationship has dominion over husband and wife as long as they live. After the husband or wife dies, he or she is released from the law (see Rom 7:1-3; 1 Cor 7:39 ). Moreover, human’s sinful flesh, sinful nature, and sinful thoughts keep the marriage from being perfect. Many marriages have problems: debts (big or small), love affairs etc. These circumstances mess up their marriages. Thus many marriages end up in divorce. Some people complain that it is unfair that some have single spouses while many have multiple wives. How can God solve the unfair problem? No need to worry. God who has judged and numbered their hairs knows their needs, just as He had matched Adam and Eve.
For all believers whose characters will be changed will be like Jesus who obeys God completely. The sinful flesh, nature or thoughts are abandoned. God, who is our heavenly Father, will take care of everything that our minds cannot understand now. He will match humans according to their perfect choice, thus, all the saints will find total satisfaction. Each one will be perfectly happy in heaven forever and ever.
Christ Will Restore All Things
The saints will resurrect from the death when Christ returns. The glory of the Lord will heal all kinds of sicknesses. Their bodies will change to incorruptible, and they will be filled with indescribable joy and wonderful feeling, yet their outlook, sex, age and knowledge will still be the same, and their personal memories still remain in their minds. They can recognize their families, relatives, friends and other things. Angels will clothe them with white robes, then they shall be caught up together in the clouds to meet the Lord Jesus (1 Thess 4:15-18), He will bring them to the heavenly homes in heaven, and reign with Christ for one thousand years (Rev 20:4). During the millennium in heaven, they will check the human beings historical records of the world, and understand what caused sin to enter the universe and its procession and influence of the great controversy.
During the thousand years in heaven, it is similar to the new world. From one Sabbath to another, and from one New Moon to another, all the saints will go to the Holy City—New Jerusalem to worship God. Once a month in the New Moon, after worshipping God, the saints will go to the river of life and drink the living water and eat the fruits of life (Rev 2:7; 22:1-2, 17; Is 66:22-23). The children and babies will grow to their fullness; the old people will return to youth, as the day goes by. Finally their bodies and minds will grow to perfection as Adam and Eve who were created by the hand of God. They have lovely and wonderful light as sunlight shining from their bodies (Matt 13:43).
As Ellen White said, “Restored to the tree of life in the long-lost Eden, the redeemed will “grow up” (Mal 4:2) to the full stature of the race in its primeval glory. The last lingering traces of the curse of sin will be removed, and Christ’s faithful ones will appear in “the beauty of the Lord our God,” in mind and soul and body reflecting the perfect image of their Lord.
Couples Will Unite and Enjoy Together
The saints have full wisdom, spiritual and heavenly knowledge. They are perfectly intelligent and loveable. They reflect the nature of God and Lord Jesus. They have full opportunity to meet together and establish good heavenly relationship. Within one thousand years God will give them the freedom of choice to choose their eternal life partners. In God’s big family, though all saints will grow unto perfection, yet they have their personal unique character, different beauties and with special gifts. These special differences make God’s big family in perfect harmony, just as seven different colors in a rainbow. Similarly, like many branches that grow in all directions and the leaves and fruits--these unite result in perfect harmony in a big tree. Therefore, those who have the same talent, interest and gifts will group together closely for studying, working, learning and sharing everything. During the millennium the saints have plenty of time, so they have no need to hurry and rush. They will go according to the timing and rhythm to process everything, slowly and gently. They will match according to God’s will, select the best one to match with him/her, and then go forward to establish their mutual love relationship. They will attract and love one another and match perfectly as lock and key in all dimensions.
Since everyone is perfect and beautiful with many gifts in heaven, they will fall in love and attract one another. As the day goes by, the handsome men and beautiful ladies become as magnets. They attract each other. They cannot avoid falling into incredible love. The fire of love will burn within their hearts, stronger and brighter as the day goes by. It will never die down throughout eternity. They will develop personal relationships according to God’s will and choose their best partner. They will bind together with incredible love, match perfectly without a trace, inseparable like a person and his shadow. When the mature time comes, God will hold a grand wedding to match them husbands and wives as lovely couples bound with the eternal marital vows. The two and two never part again. It has fulfilled the hope: “Wishing all lovers finally got married.” And it will fulfill the lovers’ vow completely: “We will love together forever, even until to the sea dries and stones rot.” In the wonderful and beautiful heavenly home, husband and wife will become one flesh. They stay together in incredible love without parting again, enjoy the blessing together forever and ever throughout eternity.... Oh! Thank God and praise His name! For heaven is so wonderful and beautiful beyond our thoughts!
In God’s heavenly home, all the couples have matched perfectly without a trace. There is no one who will complain that he/she did not find the ideal partner before his/her marriage, or cannot find the ideal one so that he/she wants to live a single lonely life throughout all the days of eternal life. Neither will there be someone who says he/she was in a hurry and just simply got someone to marry, but finally marry the wrong person. Since all the saints keep God’s word and the Ten Commandments, they are faithful to his/her spouse throughout eternity. Therefore, there are no three persons involved in love affair. No changing lover, no divorce, no polygamy or homosexual marriage in the new world. For all these abnormal marital relationships had passed away forever....
The End of the Great Controversy
After the millennium, the Holy City and the saints will descend on this world. God will let all the people who are wicked resurrect from the death. There is vision in heaven to show them what the reason that caused the great controversy, and its procession and influence in the world history. They will know and confess their sins; God will reward them according to their works. When Satan leads all the rebellions that fought against the Holy City, there is fire that will come down from God to devour them (Rev 20:7-10). This is what the prophet Isaiah predicted: that from one new moon to another, from one Sabbath to another, the saints after they worship God, will come out of the Holy City to look upon the corpses of the men who have transgressed against God. Their worm does not die, and their fire is not quenched. They shall be abhorrence to all flesh (Is 66:24). It is the beginning scene of the new world. It will not be like this forever. Until the sinners have been rewarded to their fullness they will burn to ashes and that will leave them neither root nor branch. Until that time, God will wipe away all tears from their eyes; because the eternal death to the wick people is indeed very sorrowful. The saints will shed tears for their ancestors, parents, husbands, wives, children, relatives and friends. They have departed the face of God, and lost in the darkness, and exist on earth no more forever and ever.
The memories of the saints will remain until the end of the great controversy; all the living beings have understood the righteousness and love of God. God will comfort them and wipe away their tears, and delete the entire unhappy memories in from minds. Then God will recreate a new world, and say, “Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth; and the former shall not be remembered or come to mind. But be glad and rejoice forever in what I create” (Is 65:17-18). At that time, the saints have no past memories as Adam and Eve. There is a total new world that would appear before them. They will come out from the Holy City dancing, leaping, and praising God. The prophecy of Malachi will be fulfilled, “But to you who fear my name the Sun of Righteousness shall arise with healing in His wings; and you shall go out [from the Holy City] and grow fat like stall-fed calves. You shall trample the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet on the day that I do this,” Says the LORD of hosts” (Mal 4:2-3, words added). When all the saints gather together in the grand and solemn meeting before God, the prophecy of Isaiah 65:17-25 has been fulfilled. God the Father will proclaim that He creates the new heavens and a new earth for His children to enjoy the eternal lives. God wants to bless all the saints to bring forth children to fill the earth, and subdue it; have dominion over the living beings on the earth, establish the whole world as heaven on earth and fulfill the original plan of creation of God. And also let Christ’s prayer be fulfilled completely: “Your kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven“ (Matt 6:9-10).
God’s Plan Will Be Fulfilled
Finally, God’s original plan will be fulfilled. The earth will be filled with saints, having dominion over the earth (Gen 1: 27-28). God has chosen his people from all ages through Christ’s atonement. Will procreation be needed in heaven? Dr. Bacchiocchi said, “In the context of the hypothetical situation of seven brothers marrying the same woman to give her an offspring, Christ’s reference to not marrying or giving in marriage but being like angels, most likely means that marriage as means of procreation will no longer exist in the world to come.”
However, God through the prophet Isaiah has prophesied that the saints in new heaven and new earth, “They shall not labor in vain, nor bring forth children for trouble; for they shall be the descendants of the blessed of the LORD, and their offspring with them” (Is 65:23, NKJV). There are may same meaning translations in this verse, such as “bear children" in NIV, RSV; “beget children” in New American Bible; ”give birth to children” in New Century Version (also see Is 66:7-10). After the fall, God told Eve, “In pain you shall bring forth children” (Gen 3:16). The original Hebrew Yalad which means “bring forth” in this verse is the same word in Isaiah 65:23 Yalad. SDA Bible Commentary in Isaiah 65:23, Bring forth, saying, “Heb. Yalad, ‘to bring forth children.’” Since God has promised them will bring forth children as Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, so they will surely fulfill this prophecy.
Sure enough, in Isaiah chapter 11, God said continually, “The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, the leopard shall lie down with the young goat, the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. The cow and the bear shall graze; their young ones shall lie down together; and the lion shall eat straw like the ox. The nursing child shall play by the cobra’s hole, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the viper’s den. They shall not hurt nor destroy in all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Is 11:6-9). Compare this prophecy with Isaiah 65:17-25 in new heaven and new earth, few descriptions are the same, so it is pointing to the same place--the holy mountain of the new world. Therefore, this prophecy is the prolongation prophecy of chapter 65:17-25, obviously, these “little child,” ”nursing child” and the “weaned child” are born in the new world, not brought from this old world, for it is the new world after millennium. It shows that there are marriages and families, parents and children relationship in the new world. As Ellen White has quoted this text for many times with Isaiah 65:17-25 talking the new heaven and new earth, she compounds them together and descript that this is the wonderful and peaceful holy mountain of God in the new world to come.
If God has blessed them to bring forth children (or bear children) in the new world as Adam and Eve, then we have no doubt to believe that the saints will enjoy their marital relationship. However, still many argue that since the Bible does not mention that during the millennium God will marry the saints as husband and wife. Let us refer to the Genesis 1:28 then we may know better. The Bible says, after God created Adam and Eve, then God bless them immediately with giving birth many children to fill the earth, but before this text the Bible does not mention God has married them. If they are not husband and wife, how could God blessed them to give many children? As we know God never contradicted Himself. Our God is the God of reasonable and logical God, since God has blessed them to bring forth children, thus, through the marital principle, we have reason to believe that they had marital relationship before they can accepted the blessing.
Isaiah 65:23 and Genesis 1:28 are parallel or similar, they agree each other, and they both mention the same new heaven and new earth. God has blessed the first couple in the Garden of Eden; likewise He will bless all the saints to give birth children in the new world to come. Both of these have based on a male and a female marital principle. Therefore, we have reason to believe that before the saints descent to the new world, God had matched them as eternal loving couples during the millennium in heaven (though the Bible does not mention on this point, for the Bible does not mention everything in detail). Then in logically or reasonably, God will bless them to bring forth children in the new heaven and new earth. They will establish lovely marital relationship, give birth children to their harmony and lovely homes, they will enjoy their wonderful, beautiful, perfect happiness and joy of their new lives in the new world, day by day; month by month; year by year, throughout the eternity forever and ever....
Christ said in that new world there is neither marry nor are given in marriage is only limit to the saints, but there is no limited to those who are born in the new world. When they grow to mature, they can choose the best one to fall in love, and marry as lovely couple to establish their happy home. This will fulfill the original plan of God who had blessed Adam and Eve and their descendants will fill the earth and dominion all the living beings (Gen 1:28).
In the new world, it is the blessing and great joy for women to give birth children, they will not in pain like this world due to commit sin. Every baby is born into the family is the gift of God, the baby will look perfect intelligence, beautiful, active and lovable; then the parent will understand what is the real meaning of “with a child we have no want.” God will control the population of the new world, until His original plan has been fulfilled—fill the earth and subdue it, then God will make humans’ production ability to its end. Just as God had closed up all the wombs of the house of king Abimelech, so will He do it to human beings as He sees fit. Therefore, we do not worry that it will over populate and create many problems in the new world (Gen 1:28; 20:17-18).
The New Heaven and New Earth
The new heaven and new earth mentioned in Revelation will be once again the Garden of Eden after has been made new by God. What the first Adam had lost, the second Adam Jesus Christ through His redemption will restore it to its fullness that is including a husband and a wife lovely and wonderful marital relationship. This is the final fulfillment of the original plan of creation and redemption of God.
God will allow them use their minds and hands, to develop their heavenly gifts of spiritual, mental, physical, social, true, good, beautiful, lovely, courteous, artistically in ten dimensions to its fullness. God will open the mystery treasures of the entire universe for them to study; more over, they can fly to the unnumbered not fallen worlds for further communication with the children of God. They will share the love and righteousness of God so wonderful and true, which will last forever and ever. In the heavenly unnumbered years, God will bless them with different gifts, they will develop in all dimensions, such as in the spiritual truth, psalms and literatures, science and arts, songs and music, buildings and designs, clothing and showings, making all the necessity living things to its fullness, beauty and perfection. Many things will shine as sunlight so wonderful, beautiful and glory. Let God to be glory; happiness and peace be on earth.
In the new world, the saints will build their luxurious big houses in rows, to create beautiful streets, and establish a huge country-city, and make all kinds of the useful daily necessities, and create many most attractive arts and crafts; show and make all kinds of clothing, shoes and socks, etc. They will plant gardens of all kind of sweet and delicious fruits, beautiful flowers and wonderful grasses, enjoy the big, fragrant, sweet and delicious fruits; enjoy all kinds of the beautiful flowers; they will enjoy the art of gardening. They still need to train all kinds of animals, birds, and fishes as their partners, and they will together develop the whole world as heaven on earth (Is 65:21-23; Gen 1:28).
Concerning the development of the future new world, God has revealed it to Ellen G. White, she wrote:
There, immortal minds will contemplate with never-failing delight the wonders of creative power, the mysteries of redeeming love. There will be no cruel, deceiving foe to tempt to forgetfulness of God. Every faculty will be developed, every capacity increased. The acquirement of knowledge will not weary the mind or exhaust the energies. There the grandest enterprises may be carried forward, the loftiest aspirations reached, the highest ambitions realized; and still there will arise new heights to surmount, new wonders to admire, new truths to comprehend, fresh objects to call forth the powers of mind and soul and body.
All the treasures of the universe will be open to the study of God's redeemed. Unfettered by mortality, they wing their tireless flight to worlds afar--worlds that thrilled with sorrow at the spectacle of human woe and rang with songs of gladness at the tidings of a ransomed soul. With unutterable delight the children of earth enter into the joy and the wisdom of unfallen beings. They share the treasures of knowledge and understanding gained through ages upon ages in contemplation of God's handiwork....
And the years of eternity, as they roll, will bring richer and still more glorious revelations of God and of Christ. As knowledge is progressive, so will love, reverence, and happiness increase. The more men learn of God, the greater will be their admiration of His character.
Conclusion and Appeal
At the end, during the millennium in heaven, God will match all the saints as one husband and one wife, and bless them to produce children, to establish happy and healthy families in the new heaven and new earth. We have no doubt that the saints will enjoy their sweet marital relationship and bring forth children to establish their harmony families, and to develop the whole world as heaven on earth, fulfilled the original plan of God’s creation as unnumbered un-fallen words. The saints will keep God’s word and Ten Commandants completely.
They are faithful one another and keep the eternal marital vow; the couples will bind together with incredible love, match perfectly without a trace, inseparable like a person and his shadow, and they stay together, comparable together wherever they go. They will never part again and live with God the Father, Lord Jesus Christ, all the saints, and all the creatures lovingly and happily in the new world forever and ever throughout the eternity.... Amen.
Since God has prepared a perfect spouse for all the saints, we will establish a mutual love with them, and stay together to enjoy the blessing of the kingdom forever. What an excellently good news it is to us! Therefore, giving all diligence, add to your faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness and love to all people. Grow until perfection in the Lord. Do the will of God and try your best to enter the Kingdom of heaven. Do not be discouraged, grow cold, and become backsliders, because the One who promises us is faithful. He never lies, His promise never fail. Our labor and suffering in this world, and some have faced broken hearts, devoices and lose spouses, and many are not yet marry in lives, however, when we think those who wait for us the beautiful ladies and handsome men in heaven, better than the prince on white house or white snow princess, they will match with us perfectly and become our incredible lovers, together enjoy the eternal lives, then we will be completely satisfy. Oh! Thanks be to the Lord, and praise His name, for His gift is great, perfect, treasure, and good forever!
Questions and Answers
1. In heaven there will be many fulfilling relationships. What we can enjoy the most is that we will be with God and Jesus. Spousal relationship is not our priority.
Answer: Yes. In heaven, there are indeed many wonderful things to enjoy. The most wonderful thing is with God the Father and Lord Jesus Christ. However, the relationship with a spouse is one of the billion wonderful gifts of God, which is unique, no other can replace. All gifts have their functions without becoming conflicts to others. God and Lord Jesus Christ, are the God and Lord of universe, they know our daily needs. They will match a spouse for us to love, to share, to accompany just as God knows it is not good for Adam to live alone. He created Eve as a wife, to stand beside him, to love and to be loved as a lover and helper for Adam forever and ever.
2. Sex has been perceived by many as dirty. It brings many problems, such as AIDS, adultery, premarital sex, abortion, and murder. How can God allow sex in heaven to pollute the wonderful land?
Answer: In the beginning, God designed and created sex which was good and sacred, and had nothing to do with sin. It is not only for procreation but it is also a healthy ingredient for a solid relationship. As Lewis Rambo in his book, The Divorcing Christian, says, “Our bodies and our sexual desires are God’s gift to us, not perverse, evil things.” And Jeffrey and Pattiejean Brown in their book, The Topal Marriage, says, “It is God’s intention that sexual intercourse take place with the security of a committed marital relationship.” And also they say, “Sex is a gift of God. Sex is, in fact, God’s wedding gift to every married couple and it is a gift He does not want opened early.” In addition, Cleveland and Philip McDonald in their book, Creating a Successful Christian Marriage, say, “Thus the phrase ‘they shall be one flesh’ is evidence that sex is God-given and becomes sinful only when it is misused and perverted. God intends for husband and wife to express their love through the sexual relationship. . . . In the atmosphere of faithfulness, where the sex act is one of the expressions of love.”
The Bible says, “Marriage is honorable among all” (Heb 13:4). God created sex for the marriage and one has to be faithful to his or her spouse. Since Jesus proclaimed that the Ten Commandments never been abolished, therefore, we still need to keep the Ten Commandments in heaven included the fifth Commandment: “Honor your father and your mother.” The seventh Commandment: “You shall not commit adultery.” And the tenth Commandment: “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife” (Ex 20:12, 14, 17). The Ten Commandments show that in the new heaven and new earth there are still having families and homes, parents and children, husbands and wives marital relationship.
Sex within the marriage is good and wonderful; it is the blessing and most precious gift of God in faithful marriage lives. There is no AIDS, or other sicknesses related to committing adultery or do other lawlessness within a marriage.
The birds, insects, fishes, and animals need opposite sex to produce offspring; while plants and trees need male and female counterparts to fertilize its seeds for its kinds. In heaven we will eat the fruits of life each month, it is necessary that these counterparts need to fertilize its seeds too.
3. Heaven is a wonderful place, as the Bible says, “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Cor 2:9). Then how can you know there is marriage in heaven?
Answer: If you read the text carefully, you will discover the text is not talking about heaven. Actually in the context, Paul speaks, “The wisdom of God in a mystery the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory” (1 Cor 2:7). This text was quoted from Isaiah, “For since the beginning of the world, men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, nor has the eye seen any God besides You, who acts for the one who waits for Him” (Is 64:4). It is talking God’s wisdom and His actions are so wonderful that we can neither think, nor hear, nor understand. Heaven is neither a dream-like, surreal, imagination-based, wind-like, nor shadowy. It is real. Heaven is genuine and wonderful, as God proclaimed, “Behold, I make all things new… for these words are true and faithful” (Rev 21:5). This world is the prolongation of the Garden of Eden. But because of sin, the world has become polluted and chaotic. In retrospect, more than six thousand years ago in the Garden of Eden, there was also a new heaven and new earth. Everything was new, beautiful and perfect. God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone, so He created and matched Eve to Adam as a perfect couple.
God is the Creator and Governor, the unnumbered worlds in the entire universe is God’s Kingdom and His home. Since our world is one of the unnumbered worlds, thus, the principles and laws which God had established are never changed and apply to all worlds in the universe, nothing to do with sin. As we know, this world is the prolongation of the Garden of Eden; the future new world is the restoration of the Garden of Eden. Therefore, the principles and the laws are the same in all unnumbered worlds in the entire universe. Thus, through the principles and the biblical truth, we can properly understand some things in the new world to come only if the sin and its influence and pollution of this world is deleted. God created Adam and Eve according to His form and image with all kinds of desires, interests and passions. It is God’s original, normal and good design. If men keep God’s word and His laws, their desires, interests, and passions will develop to its perfection, the world will establish as heaven on earth. Obviously, in God’s great families in the entire universe, the physical and psychological needs of human beings basically are the same.
A Chinese proverb says, “Wishing all lovers finally get married and established a family.” This is the desire of all human beings regardless time, nation, language, and race. In fact, in the everlasting Kingdom of Heaven, if God does not match all the saints to be husband and wife, and let them to love and to be loved intimately, and enjoy together all wonderful and beautiful things in Heaven, it will not be completely perfect, and would not reach the original plan of God who made male and female in the beginning.
Please think of it, if there is unnumbered handsome men and beautiful ladies, they all have many wonderful gifts, they attract and love one another incredible; if God wants them remain single forever, cannot and should not marry as husband and wife, absolutely no sexual relationship will be allowed, even they are wonderful lovers, love one another perfectly day and night, yet never have intimate marital relationship, let them burn with passion one by one continuously. As the day goes by, we believe that sooner or later heaven will have confusion and chaos among them. No more peace, happiness and joy in heaven. Obviously, couples fall in love and finally got married is the natural result. It is the will of God who created man and woman in the beginning.
Actually, the laws and principles are the same in heaven and on earth. All human beings are the same in their physical and psychological needs, for God created men and women who have all kinds of desires and passions. If they keep God’s word and Ten Commandments, then all things will be in harmony. They will develop the whole world as heaven on earth according to God’s original plan. They will live happily and harmoniously in God’s big family. Please note, when Adam was created on the 6th day, not even one day has passed when God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.” Think of it, if Adam is not good to live alone is it good for all the saints to live alone throughout eternity? Today we fear to live alone on earth. Similarly, the saints will also feel the same in the new world to come. Ellen G. White said, “Man was not made to dwell in solitude; he was to be a social being. Without companionship the beautiful scenes and delightful employments of Eden would have failed to yield perfect happiness. Even communion with angels could not have satisfied his desire for sympathy and companionship. There was none of the same nature to love and to be loved.”
Paul said, “Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.” And he also said, “But if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion” (1 Cor 7:2-3, 9). More over Paul said, “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and two shall become one flesh.... Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband” (Eph 5:31, 33; see 1 Tim 5:14).
4. The Bible does not explicitly talk about God matching male with female to be husband and wife in heaven. Does the ratio of male to female who are entering heaven have to be the same for the matching to work?
Answer: Let us remember that all good gifts are from God who never changes. As the Bible says, “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning” (James 1:17). God never changes, so the truths, the principles, and His laws never change as well. All these principles are functioning in the entire universe and will continue forever. Ellen G. White said:
In the instruction given in our schools, the natural and the spiritual are to be combined. The laws obeyed by the earth reveal the fact that it is under the masterly power of an infinite God. The same principles run through the spiritual and the natural world.... The Author of nature is the Author of the Bible. Creation and Christianity have one God. God is revealed in nature, and God is revealed in His word. In clear rays the light shines from the sacred page, showing us the living God, as represented in the laws of His government, in the creation of the world, in the heavens that He has garnished.
The Bible does not mention everything in the new world. Sometimes the Bible only mentions one point of a whole, leading us to think and to understand the rest. Though there is no text that mention God would match the saints before they enter the new world, actually, neither does the Bible mention everything in heaven. For instance, the Bible only mentions, “They shall plant vineyards and eat their fruit” (Is 65:21) in new heaven and in the new earth. It does not mention what other kinds of fruits to eat. Is it true that we have nothing but grapes and fruits of life to eat? The Bible only mentions a point and readers need to understand the rest, as the Bible says, “Whoever reads, let him understand” (Matt 24:15). Even Jesus Christ’s words and deeds are not all recorded in the Bible (see John 21:25). What we read in the Bible is only the most important portions. We need to think and understand other points through His unchanging principles.
Jesus said, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’ for this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh?’ So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate” (Matt 19:4-6).
The new heaven and new earth in Revelation is the heaven and earth that have been made new in Genesis. God had matched Adam and Eve. He will likewise match all the saints. It is God’s divine power and right.
Think about this: Since God had created and matched Adam and Eve as husband and wife at the creation week, and death is but only a dreamless sleep, what happens when Adam and Eve wake up at the resurrection day? Would God who hates divorce abolish their husband and wife relationship and divorce them in the new world to come? Jesus in a parable said, “Is it not lawful for me to do what I wish with my own things? Or is your eye evil because I am good” (Matt 20:15)?
In Revelation, Christ redeems His Church as the symbol of the marriage of the Lamb. A great multitude in Heaven said with a loud voice, “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints. Then he said to me, “Write: Blessed are those who are called to the marriage supper of the Lamb!” And he said to me, “These are the true sayings of God” (Rev 19:7-9). Think of this as the symbol of unity of Christ with His Church—the Holy City New Jerusalem. Yet it could mean that the marriage of the saints in the millennium is true, holy, good and happy.
The number of the believers in this world will not be the same number of the faithful who will pass the judgment of God and be permitted to enter heaven. Jesus said, “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven” (Matt 7:21). God will judge and match with them, male and female, two and two. It is God’s divine right and power to bestow upon a person with the most wonderful gift--a perfectly matching spouse. Even though the number of saints of male and female is different, God has a thousand ways to solve the imbalance ratio. As He used Adam’s flesh and bone to made Eve to match with him, He can create perfect spouses from ribs too. We should have faith in God who is a wonderful, kind, and lovely heavenly Father. He will do everything excellent for us throughout eternity. (The end)

Matthew had missed some important words, just as Peter has missed some important words of God who descent to the mountain and introduced His beloved Son Jesus to them, and commanded them to “Hear Him!” But Peter has missed these important words. Similarly, Mark has missed another words: “in whom I am well pleased.” But Luke was recorded that “the Chosen One” is different from Matthew “in whom I am well pleased” (compare Matt 17:5; Mark 9:7; Luke 9:35 with 2 Pet 1:17). Obviously, it is possible that the author of the Bible, sometime has a little different, and sometime has missing few words.

This article is my personal Bible study. Nothing to do with the belief of the church. You may study and discuss with those who interest in this interesting and important topic. If you still have questions and doubt, since Jesus said, “For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels of God in heaven.” Then how come they still have marriage in heaven, is there something misunderstand, or the Bible text has missing some important words? Please read through the article “Interpretation According to the Principles of the Bible.” It will give you the explanation in detail.
