In 1 King 19, it talks about the still small voice (verse 11).  Is it possible to hear one today?  If so, how would one know that they have heard one?  I know that God does not allow Satan to enter our minds and knock our emotions, so how would I know if what I though or hear is from the Lord and not from the Devil?  I also understand that the Devil can whisper into your ear, so how would I discern whether what I hear or think is from God or Satan?  Please supply bible texts and anything from Ellen White.  Thank you very much for your cooperation, I really appreciate it.  May God bless you!

Psalm 46:10 "Be still, and know that I am God."

Gen 26:3   If you take time to listen to God just like Abraham did and God said, "I will be with you and bless you and your descendants …" Gen 28:15 tells us that Jacob, fleeing for his life, in loneliness heard a voice from the majestic starry sky said, "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land, for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you."

Read the story of Job in the Bible.  Job was a sick man from the feet to the head physically and spiritually.  His friends, his wife and Job himself agued that God was unfair and unjust for letting him suffered such terrible situations.  We all are similar to Job, his wife and his friends.  We do not listen and is impatient to wait for God to speak to us.  We need to listen more as Matt. 11:15 says, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!"  Job finally listened to the voice of God.  Job 38: 2,3 God answered Job out of the whirlwind, and said: "Who is this who darkens counsel.  By words without knowledge?  Now prepare yourself like a man; I will question you, and you shall answer Me."  God revealed Himself in nature without any explanation about his disease or sufferings.  When God finished revealing himself Job exclaimed, "He beholds every high thing; he is king over all the children of pride."  Job 41: 34.  "I know that You can do everything, and that no purpose of Yours can be withheld from You… Therefore, I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes." Job 42: 2, 6.

Job 11:7 "Can you search out the deep things of God?"  Can you find out the limits of the Almighty?"  God does not ask man to find Him only by the study of His plan and nature. Neither would God speak to all men directly in the still small voice.  In this modern age many of us do not seem to hear God speaking in the "still small voice" because we do not listen and believe as the Bible says to Jacob in Gen 28:15 " I am with you and keep you wherever you go."  Leaders like George Washington at Valley Forge heard God's still small voice and Abraham Lincoln, in despair at the White House receive hope as they pondered on God's promises "I am with you and keep; you wherever you go."

In this modern age God is still our best friend every minute of our lives.  Living in the 2000's life is faster-paced than ever before, expectations are higher, needs are everywhere.  Life for everyone can be draining for a variety of reasons.  We must spent quality time with God, then only we can hear Him speak.  It is no necessary for God to speak to us in the distinct still small voice like He spoke to Elijah.  The Holy Spirit is the one that impress upon you - God's impression as Isa 30:21 says, "Your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, "This is the way, walk in it, Whenever you turn to the right hand or whenever you turn to the left" Rose Neff Sikora, a registered nurse talk of her experience how she had no intention of buying a musical box but because she heard an impression saying "This is the way, walk in it," so she went into the gift shop while she was on her break working in the hospital.  She was impressed with the musical box with the music "You needed Me."  She was compelled and bought the musical box and then put it away on top of the coat closet and wondering why did she buy that.  Several months passed and she had totally forgotten the musical box until her friend's anniversary day.  The and her husband were invited to the occasion and she had to work from 7:00 a. m to 7:00 p.m. and she had no time to look for a gift.  Her husband said, "We'll just have to go without one."  All day she was trying to think of some little memento to take for a gift.  Suddenly she remembered the lovely musical box tucked away in the closet.  She proudly gave the musical box to her friend at the party.  When it was time to open the gifts.  Rose's friends untied the pink ribbon and removed the wrapping paper from her present and exclaimed, "Oh how pretty!" and held the musical box closed to her ears.  Tears welled up in her eyes and ran down her cheeks.  "This was our favourite love song when we were dating," She explained.  Both of them were very touched and Rose felt that she was privilege to give a gift that brought them so much joy on this special occasion.   This story tells us that many times we are impressed to do something we do not understand and turn out to be a blessing to someone.  The Lord does not talk directly to us.  He impresses us by his still small voice, when we tune our ears to listen to Him.

I also have such experiences when I am impressed to walk into stores, which I have no intention to buy any clothes.   I bought excellent and nice quality dresses, which I cannot afford to pay for the original prices, like 50-70% off.  During shopping I would whisper a prayer asking God to help me resist temptation of buying unnecessary things and what I do not need.   Usually, I am impressed to buy things economically that I wanted for years, but could not afford and finally I believe the Holy Spirit lead me to the right venue and I got what I want and very contended and thankful to God for His impression, I do believe God talks to me in His still small voice through my conscience.  You can differentiate God's voice or Satan's voice by using the Bible, God's words as the standard for your good judgments.  Anything, you are impressed to do does not contradict your belief in Bible, "then walk in it."  Matt 10:4 says the sheep knows and recognized the shepherd's voice, "…the sheep follow him, for they know his voice."

In Ps 34:15 "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and His ears are open to their cry."  God seemed quiet but He is still looking down from heaven and protecting His children.  Ps 27:14 "Wait on the Lord; be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart.  Wait, I say, on the Lord!"  Ps 62:5 "My soul, wait silently for God alone.  For my expectation is from Him."  Ps 33:20 "Our soul waits for the Lord; He is our help and our shield."   Isa 45:22 "Look to Me and be saved, All you ends of the earth!"  Matt 11:28 "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." Matt 28:20 "Lo, I am with you always, even at the end of age."

Yes, God does not allow Satan to enter our minds and knock our emotions.   It is very important that you study God's Word, the Bible carefully, to understand conditions, situations and discern the right and wrong.  We must all seek wisdom from God to discern error and deception.  Matt 24:24 "For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great signs and wonders to deceive, if possible the elect."  If we do what we can on our part to be ready for the delusions coming upon the world, God will do His part, and all-powerful arm will protect us.  Ps. 17:5 "Commit your way to the Lord, Trust also in Him, And He shall bring it to pass."         2 Timothy 2:15 "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth."

You have to ask God for wisdom to discern the good and evil.  God has promised you wisdom in James 1:5 "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach and it will be given him."
