Rev 16:13 says, "And I saw three unclean spirits like frogs coming out of the mouth of the dragon, out of the mouth of the beast, and out of the mouth of the false prophet. For they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty." Only here Revelation uses the term, "false prophet". Rev 13 also speaks of three evil powers: "The dragon gave him [the beast with seven heads and ten horns] his power, his throne, and great authority." John says, "And I saw one of his heads as if it had been mortally wounded, and his deadly wound was healed. And all the world marveled and followed the beast. So they worshiped the dragon who gave authority to the beast."Rev 13:11 says, "Then I saw another beast coming up out of the earth, and he had two horns like a lamb and spoke like a dragon. He was granted power to give breath to the image of the beast, that the image of the beast should both speak and cause as many as would not worship the image of the beast to be killed. He causes all, both small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hand or on their foreheads, and that no one may buy or sell except one who has the mark or the name of the beast, or the number of his name.
Rev 16:14 says that the three frogs are "spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”
1) This seems to be a global religio-political movement, as it deals with worship, and causes rulers of all nations to oppose God.
Answer: Yes, and the true people of God will naturally bear the brunt of attack. Recently pope John Paul II has been very active in the political arena. He not only poses as the world religious leader, but the leaders of other churches admit that they can in no way compare with him. Thus this figure that has the largest following, feels equal to the title of world leader, so that his every utterance is regarded as from on high. This aptly fulfills the prophecy, “all the world marveled and followed”him. But “all the world” does not include the people of God, for they study their Bibles, and do not marvel and follow after this popular figure.
2) Some people wonder why the Bible calls such a high-ranking person a “beast.”
Answer: That is not strange. Bible prophecy regularly refer to political powers as beasts, because they work by the principle of force. As one saying goes, “political clout comes out of a gun barrel.”The Vatican is not only a religious entity, but also a political power, having diplomatic relations with 116 nations. If the Chinese government agrees and makes provision for it, the pope is ready to break relations with Taiwan in order to enter the Chinese mainland. Yet her greatest ambition is to control the United States.
The book The Great Controversy was written by Ellen White in 1881. She wrote of the aims of the papacy in the following words:
“Marvelous in her shrewdness and cunning is the Roman Church. She can read what is to be. She bides her time, seeing that the Protestant churches are paying her homage in their acceptance of the false Sabbath and that they are preparing to enforce it by the very means which she herself employed in bygone days. Those who reject the light of truth will yet seek the aid of this self-styled infallible power to exalt an institution that originated with her. How readily she will come to the help of Protestants in this work it is not difficult to conjecture. Who understands better than the papal leaders how to deal with those who are disobedient to the church?
“The Roman Catholic Church, with all its ramifications throughout the world, forms one vast organization under the control, and designed to serve the interests, of the papal see. Its millions of communicants, in every country on the globe, are instructed to hold themselves as bound in allegiance to the pope. Whatever their nationality or their government, they are to regard the authority of the church as above all other. Though they may take the oath pledging their loyalty to the state, yet back of this lies the vow of obedience to Rome, absolving them from every pledge inimical to her interests.
“History testifies of her artful and persistent efforts to insinuate herself into the affairs of nations; and having gained a foothold, to further her own aims, even at the ruin of princes and people.
“And let it be remembered, it is the boast of Rome that she never changes. The principles of Gregory VII and Innocent III are still the principles of the Roman Catholic Church. And had she but the power, she would put them in practice with as much vigor now as in past centuries. Protestants little know what they are doing when they propose to accept the aid of Rome in the work of Sunday exaltation. While they are bent upon the accomplishment of their purpose, Rome is aiming to re-establish her power, to recover her lost supremacy. Let the principle once be established in the United States that the church may employ or control the power of the state; that religious observances may be enforced by secular laws; in short, that the authority of church and state is to dominate the conscience, and the triumph of Rome in this country is assured.”The Great Controversy, pp 580, 581
3) The remark, “she bides her time,” is significant. Now it appears that her time has come!
Answer: Yes. Now they are taking hold of their opportunity. Early in 1991 the “Catholic Campaign for America” was started, and held their First Annual National Convention in Washington, D.C., November 17, 18, 1995. Their present slogan is, “Seizing the Catholic Moment.” They say, “We are building the greatest coalition of Catholic leaders in American history.” They are using every means of propaganda to let the public realize that they are a powerful force in American religious and political life. In 1776 there were only 30,000 Catholics in the U.S., comprising 1.4% of the population. Today they number 57 million, making up 26% of the nation. They have 2 million students, of whom 660,000 are in 226 Catholic universities. A third of American congressmen are Catholics, numbering 149 in 1996. 30% of the justices in the U.S. Supreme Court are Catholic, and most of them believe in the union of church and state.
American Protestants used to have strong antipathy for Catholics, for they could not forget the Middle Ages, when the pope initiated the Crusades and the Inquisition to suppress true Christians for 1260 years. In 1848, after the U.S. government began to build the Washington monument, the pope sent a granite block to be built in the monument as a token of friendship. When the block arrived at Washington, it was seized by a group of Protestants and thrown into the Potomac river. This shows the general anti-Catholic sentiment that prevailed at the time. It was during the years of such strong feelings that Ellen White wrote: “The Protestants of the United States will be foremost in stretching their hands across the gulf to grasp the hand of spiritualism; they will reach over the abyss to clasp hands with the Roman power; and under the influence of this threefold union, this country will follow in the steps of Rome in trampling on the rights of conscience.” Op. Cit. p. 588. Now this change IS taking place before our eyes.
4) In view of the historical climate of her day, the prophetic insight of Ellen White could not have been gained from observation, but the Holy Spirit must have revealed to her the truths hidden in Bible prophecy.
Answer: Yes. Ralph Reed, who was executive director of the Christian Coalition in 1995, was invited to speak at this First Annual Convention of Catholic Campaign for America. He said, “I believe that the emerging alliance, the emerging partnership of Catholics and Evangelical Protestants, is going to be the most powerful force in the electorate in the 1990’s and beyond---and anybody that ignores that alliance is going to make a big mistake. . . .Any candidate who wins that Catholic vote will be able to govern America. . . The Catholic vote holds the key to the future of America.” Reed went on to say,
“I think you know that we have recently a division of the Christian Coalition called the Catholic Alliance, which is designed to formalize and continue to build bridges in our partnership with Roman Catholics. The Catholic Alliance, like the Catholic Campaign, will be a lay movement. The fact is that already today, 16 percent---250,000---of the members of the Christian Coalition are Roman Catholic.. . . There is no denying that we have been separated as people of faith by a century-long chasm of distrust and suspicion. The good news is that chasm is being bridged and that those walls are crumbling. I believe that this is not the work of any man. I believe that it is the work of God. I believe that He is ushering in a new work. . . .
“And that is why we were so thrilled to join with . . . in supporting the Evangelicals and Catholics uniting together project, . . .My friends, we have a lot of work to do. Let’s go out and do it and let’s do it with arms locked---united.” The pope has said that the year 2000 will be “a great Catholic Golden Age.” Quoted by G. Edward Reid in Sunday’s Coming, pp 72-74.
5) Where in The Great Controversy does it say that the churches will urge congress to pass a Sunday law and punish violators?
Answer: On p. 573 it says, “In the movements now in progress in the United States to secure for the institutions and usages of the church the support of the state, Protestants are following in the steps of papists. Nay, more, they are opening the door for the papacy to regain in Protestant America the supremacy which she has lost in the Old World. And that which gives greater significance to this movement is the fact that the principal object contemplated is the enforcement of Sunday observance--a custom which originated with Rome, and which she claims as the sign of her authority. It is the spirit of the papacy--the spirit of conformity to worldly customs, the veneration for human traditions above the commandments of God--that is permeating the Protestant churches and leading them on to do the same work of Sunday exaltation which the papacy has done before them.
In the Dec. 25, 1906 issue of Watchman magazine, Ellen White wrote: “While men are sleeping, Satan is actively arranging matters so that the Lord’s people may not have mercy or justice. The Sunday movement is now making its headway in darkness. The leaders are concealing the true issue, and many who unite in the movement do not themselves see whither the under-current is tending. Its professions are mild, and apparently Christian; but when it shall speak, it will reveal the spirit of the dragon..”
In the Jan. 1, 1889 issue of the Review & Herald, Ellen White wrote: “Prophecy represents Protestants as having lamb-like horns, but speaking like a dragon. Already we are beginning to hear the voice of the dragon. There is a satanic force propelling the Sunday movement, but it is concealed. Even the men who are engaged in the work, are themselves blinded to the results which will follow their movement. Let not the commandment-keeping people of God be silent at this time, as though we gracefully accepted the situation, There is the prospect before us, of waging a continuous war, at the risk of imprisonment, of losing property and even life itself, to defend the law of God, which is being made void by the laws of men. This Bible text will be quoted to us, ‘Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. . . . The powers that be are ordained of God.”
6) What more is there to show that Catholics and Protestants are friendly and uniting? It seems like a nice thing, why disagree?
Answer: Unity must be founded on truth. If we must sacrifice truth for sake of unity, then we should rather die than give up the truth. It is a pity that some religious leaders love fame and position more than God’s truth. John 12:42 says, “Among the rulers many believed on Him, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him, lest they should be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God.”
After the signing of Evangelicals and Catholics together on March 29, 1994, another milepost of church unity was reached when the Lutherans signed a paper on Justification by Faith with a Catholic delegate in June, 1998, declaring that they all believed that only by grace through faith, not through individual merit, can we be please God and receive the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit renews our hearts and calls on us to receive strength tp do good. On page 80 of the July 6, 1998 issue of Time magazine appeared a cartoon showing the pope shaking hands with Martin Luther. .
7) Does this mean that the Catholic church has yielded on this point and now holds the Lutheran view of justification by faith?
Answer: No. The Catholic church boasts that she never changes. This gesture on the part of Lutherans is an attempt to befriend Rome. And the pope would naturally say a few words in favor. When Martin Luther, the founder of Lutheranism, sounded his first call for reform, he posted his 95 theses to protest the shameful sale of indulgences. That was a scheme to fleece the peoples of Europe to obtain funds for building St. Peter’s cathedral in Rome. Luther declared it to be wholly contrary to the Bible truth of justification by faith. From that day the Reformation spread over all Europe. Now Rome assumes a friendly guise and talks peace with Lutheranism. Who would have thought that about six months later the pope would announce that to celebrate the “jubilee”year 2000, he would offer indulgences to every man who abstains from tobacco and alcohol for one day, or visits the sick, poor or people in prison. This special indulgence would serve to shorten the time the beneficiary will have to spend in purgatory, though the amount of time shortened is not specified. Does this not overthrow the agreement on justification by faith just signed by the Catholics and Lutherans? It clearly proves that the Catholic church never changes. This appeared in the Nov. 28, 1998 issue of the San Diego Tribune.
It is said that the U.S. Congress once discussed a Sunday-closing bill, but it was eventually defeated, is that true?
Answer: Yes. Early in 1610, after the Puritans came from England, they passed a law forcing people to rest on Sunday. Violators lost their rations, while more serious offenders were flogged or even received the death penalty. Before the signing of the Declaration of Independence, certain states had stringent Sunday laws. In 1888 the U.S. Congress debated the Blair Sunday bill, and in 1889 the Breckenridge Sunday bill. Both were defeated when Jews, Seventh-day Adventists and Seventh-day Baptists voiced their protests. Sunday-law advocates learned that it is difficult to pass such a bill by regular procedures. So it is possible that they will devise other means to bring about a Sunday law. One way is to circumvent the legislature and let the President issue an executive order. But short of a national emergency, there
would be no excuse for such an order. Some hope that in the year 2000, as computers around the world may fail, there would be a global crisis. The U.S. president can then find a pious pretext to issue an order for all to rest on Sunday to please the pope and the majority of the Protestant clergy, making people to worship God for the sake of improving public morals.
